Xbox unveils new adaptable controllers for gamers with disabilities

On August 21st, Xbox unveiled its latest accessibility devices. In collaboration with the disability gaming community and nonprofit organizations, the “Xbox Adaptable Joystick” was designed as a wired add-on for the original controllers.

The joystick is aimed at players with limited mobility. “It includes four button inputs on the front, a standard Xbox thumbstick, and two additional buttons that mimic the bumper and trigger placement on a traditional controller,” according to the official Xbox news page. The buttons are customizable so that the control can be better adapted to each player and will be on sale in early 2025.

3D Joystick Adaptations

Although the “Xbox Adaptable Joystick” is not yet available, the video game company already has 3D files of adaptable joystick thumbstick toppers to give “players even more accessibility options to use their Xbox controller.” Through the Xbox Design Lab website, any player can now print the 3D designs for free.

There are a total of 6 different joystick thumbstick topper designs that were developed thanks to the joint work with charities and a hospital with experience in adaptive gaming. Players also have the possibility of creating a customizable tip that suits their needs and can be used on current controllers.

Other Accessible Controllers for People with Disabilities

In addition to the printables, Microsoft has created two controllers for the console: the Proteus by ByoWave and the wireless Lite SE 2.4G by 8BitDo.

As for the 8BitDo Lite SE 2.4G wireless controller, the device is also aimed at players with limited mobility. According to the official page, “It features low-resistance buttons and highly sensitive Hall Effect joysticks, making it easier for everyone to play.” It also has a “non-slip silicone mat” to keep it steady on a surface while playing. This controller is already available in some markets worldwide for approximately 1,075 Mexican pesos or 55.99 dollars.

On the other hand, the Proteus controller by ByoWave is a modular controller. Due to this alternative design, people have the possibility of adjusting the parts of the device with more than 100 million different configurations. The new Proteus controller offers full customization in order to “match their unique play style,” allowing people with disabilities to play with one hand, their chin, or other parts of their body. This controller is only available in the United States, Europe, and Canada.
