In honor of Juan Gabriel, the renowned Mexican singer-songwriter, Mattel has released a Barbie doll inspired by the artist. “As a tribute to the beloved singer and his unique style, Barbie shows a dazzling outfit inspired by the colorful mariachi costumes Juan Gabriel used to wear on stage,” reads the back of the doll’s collectible box.
The Divo de Juárez, who had a music career spanning over 50 years, “expressed his love for Mexico through fashion and music,” according to the official toy company website.
The doll wears the same outfit Juan Gabriel wore during his 1990 concert at Bellas Artes. The black jacket adorned with gold accents is a hallmark of the artist’s style. To match, Barbie wears gold earrings, shoes, and a ring. The bolo tie Juanga wore in that performance has been replaced by a similar necklace. In the official promotional materials, the Barbie Juan Gabriel is showcased against a backdrop of mariachis identical to those who accompanied the Michoacan singer during his performance.
This Wednesday, August 28th, Mattel announced the doll with a countdown for members of the brand to gain early access to purchase. The collectible can be found for sale on Mattel’s official website at a price of $55. However, to obtain early access and become a special member, an additional $10 fee is required.
